Short answer
Google Shopping free listings are unpaid product results that Google shows from your Merchant Center data on the Shopping tab, Search, Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps and Gemini. To get them, create a free Merchant Center account, verify your website, submit product data (feed, app or structured data) and confirm the Free listings card under Marketing > Marketing methods is active. No Google Ads account is needed.
Key takeaways
- Free listings need only a Merchant Center account, a verified website and approved product data; no Google Ads account or budget.
- Google can show free listings on the Shopping tab, Search, Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps, Gemini and the Business Profile products module.
- The US and UK are among the 30 countries where shipping settings (or the shipping attribute) are mandatory.
- Track impressions and clicks in Merchant Center and sales in GA4 under the Organic Shopping channel group.
- From August 24, 2026, YouTube affiliate traffic is reported separately from Organic, so a late-August organic drop may be a reporting change.

What are Google Shopping free listings?
Free listings are organic product results that Google builds from your Merchant Center data and shows without charging you per click. A shopper clicks the product and lands directly on your product page, exactly like a paid Shopping ad, except nobody sends you an invoice.
Google pulls these results from the Shopping Graph, its database of products and offers. Merchant Center is the most controllable way to get your catalog into it. The same product data powers both paid Shopping ads and free listings, so a feed you fix once works on both channels.
One misconception worth killing early: free listings are not a free version of a Google Ads campaign. There are no bids, budgets or targeting settings. Ranking depends on the quality of your product data, the relevance of your landing page, your price and how well the product matches what the shopper typed. In other words, your competitive edge here comes from data quality, not spend.
Where do free listings show up on Google?
According to Google's Merchant Center Help, free listings can appear on the Shopping tab, Google Search (including rich results and the Shopping Knowledge Panel), Google Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps, Gemini and the products module on your Business Profile. Google decides which surface and format to use; you cannot opt in or out surface by surface.
| Surface | How your product appears | Data that matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Shopping tab | Product grid, price comparison, filters | Title, price, brand, variant attributes |
| Google Search | Rich results, popular products, product knowledge panel | Price, availability, shipping and returns |
| Google Images | Product tag on the image | Clean, high-resolution main image |
| Google Lens | Visually similar products to what the camera sees | Accurate category and a clear product photo |
| YouTube | Product listings next to videos and in search | Image and price consistency |
| Gemini and AI Mode | Product suggestions and comparisons inside the conversation | Detailed description, attributes, GTIN |
The AI side is the biggest 2026 story. In a Merchant Center announcement dated May 27, 2026, Google said AI performance insights are "coming soon" to show how products are discovered in AI Mode, AI Overviews in Search and the Gemini app, rolling out to the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand in the coming months. As of September 2026, don't expect the report in every account yet. There is no separate sign-up for AI shopping answers; they draw on the same product data you submit through Merchant Center.
What do you need to qualify for free listings?
Three things: follow Google's policies for showing products across Google, submit the required product attributes, and set up shipping and return information. Miss one and products get disapproved or their reach is limited.
Google's help page lists ID, title, link, image link, price, description and availability as essential attributes, with condition required for used or refurbished items. Apparel typically also needs color, size, age group and gender. If the manufacturer assigned a GTIN, send it; if not, send brand and MPN.
Shipping is where many US and UK merchants trip up. Google names 30 countries where you must configure shipping settings in Merchant Center or use the shipping attribute, and that list includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. Returns are framed as a recommendation: Google suggests adding your return policy to your website and to Merchant Center so return details can appear next to your products. Treat it as required anyway; shipping cost and return terms are among the first things shoppers compare.
- Website verified and claimed in Merchant Center
- Price, availability and currency on the product page match the feed exactly
- Return policy page is easy to find on the site and added in Merchant Center
- Shipping costs and delivery times configured for every target country
- Contact details (phone, address or email) visible on the site
- Main images free of watermarks, promo text and borders
- Checkout works end to end over HTTPS
One housekeeping note: Google announced on July 15, 2026 that in September 2026 it would consolidate its Shopping ads and free listings policies into a single set in the Help Center, described as a reorganization without new restrictions. Old bookmarked policy links may redirect.
How do you turn on free listings in Merchant Center?
Google says free listings are on by default in most cases; your job is to set up the account, get products approved and confirm the Free listings card is active. The steps below follow the Merchant Center interface as of September 2026 (the redesigned version formerly called Merchant Center Next).
- Create the account Sign up for Merchant Center for free and enter your business name, country and contact details.
- Verify your website Verify and claim your domain with the Google tag, an HTML file or a platform app such as Shopify's Google & YouTube app.
- Set shipping and returns Add shipping rates, delivery times and your return policy for each country you sell to.
- Add products Submit product data with a feed file, Google Sheets, a platform integration or structured data on your site.
- Check free listings In the left menu go to Marketing > Marketing methods and confirm the status on the Free listings card. Changing it requires admin access.
- Monitor approvals Review the Products page regularly for items flagged as needing attention and fix the listed issues.
On Shopify, BigCommerce or WooCommerce, the official Google integrations handle account linking and product sync for most stores. Still check the synced titles: platform exports often send the bare product name and leave out the attributes that help you rank.
Feed or structured data: which way should you submit products?
Use a feed if you want control and speed; structured data alone can work if your site is well marked up and you lack technical help. The most robust setup uses both. Merchant Center can crawl pages marked up with Product and Offer schema and add those products to your account automatically.
Product feed
- You decide exactly which products go in and with which titles and attributes
- Supports custom labels, product highlights, GTINs and other optional fields
- You control the update schedule
- Needs technical effort to build and maintain
On-site structured data
- Google finds products by crawling your site
- The same markup powers product rich results in organic Search
- Titles and descriptions come from page copy, so separate optimization is harder
- Products on pages with crawl errors can go missing
Google Search Central's merchant listing documentation marks name, image and an offer with price and priceCurrency as required. Recommended fields include brand, description, availability, GTIN, shippingDetails and hasMerchantReturnPolicy; Google suggests defining standard shipping and return policies once at the Organization level. The same page is explicit that only pages where a shopper can actually buy the product qualify, not category pages or pages that link to another seller.
For a field-by-field approach to titles, categories and attributes, see our Shopping feed optimization guide. With no bids involved, feed quality is almost the only lever you have over free listing rankings.
How do you track free listings performance and sales?
Track impressions and clicks in Merchant Center's performance reports, and sales and revenue in a GA4 property linked to Merchant Center. Merchant Center reports free listings as organic traffic, which you can separate from ads.
To see sales, link the accounts in GA4 under Admin > Product links > Merchant Center links and leave auto-tagging on. Per Google Analytics Help, this traffic then appears with source google, medium organic, source platform Shopping Free Listings and default channel group Organic Shopping. Auto-tagging appends an srsltid parameter to product links; do not strip it in redirects, canonical rules or caching layers.
Worked example (hypothetical): a store has 1,200 products, 1,050 of them approved. In one month Merchant Center shows 60,000 organic impressions and 900 clicks, a 1.5% click-through rate. GA4 records 18 orders from Organic Shopping, a 2% conversion rate (18 / 900). With a $65 average order value, the channel brought in $1,170 at zero click cost. If the same products cost $0.80 per click in paid Shopping, those 900 clicks would have been worth about $720 in ad spend.
Running that math for paid and free traffic side by side shows which products may not need ads at all; our ROAS guide covers how to compare the paid side properly. If pulling Google Ads, Merchant Center and GA4 numbers into one sheet is tedious, Marpany's traffic sources report puts organic shopping and paid channels in the same table.
Can free listings replace Google Shopping ads?
No, they complement them. Free listings add zero-cost visibility, but you cannot control which queries you appear for or where you rank. On competitive products, the top positions and the ad slots on Search belong to paid campaigns.
A simple decision rule:
- New store, tight budget: Start with free listings and clean up feed and site errors at zero cost. After 4 to 6 weeks you will see which products earn clicks.
- Strong organically, expensive in ads: For products that sell steadily through Organic Shopping but show weak ad returns, test lowering bids or target ROAS pressure.
- Invisible organically, high margin: This is where ads earn their keep. Buy visibility with Performance Max or Standard Shopping.

Why are my products not showing in free listings?
The usual culprits are disapproved products, account-level policy issues, price or availability mismatches between feed and page, and a Free listings card that is switched off. Check them in this order:
- Account status: Is there an account-level warning or suspension on the Merchant Center overview? Issues like misrepresentation stop every product.
- Product status: On the Products page, is the item approved or listed as needing attention?
- Marketing method: Is Free listings active under Marketing > Marketing methods?
- Consistency: Do the feed price, the page price and the structured data price match?
- Target country: Are shipping settings in place for the country you are testing from?
- Demand reality: If the product is approved, the problem may be relevance, not eligibility. Does the title contain words people actually search?
An approved product will not appear for every query. Google ranks results per search, so failing to find your product on one manual search does not prove anything is broken. Merchant Center impression data is a far more reliable signal.
What should you do this week?
Get visible first, then measure, then optimize. A small team can finish this list in a week:
- Open Marketing methods in Merchant Center and confirm the Free listings card status.
- Group disapproved products by issue type and start with the issue affecting the most items.
- Confirm shipping settings exist for every country you sell to, especially the US and UK.
- Validate Product and Offer markup on product pages with Google's Rich Results Test.
- Link GA4 and Merchant Center and make sure auto-tagging is on.
- Rewrite titles for your top 20 sellers around attributes, and expand descriptions for Gemini and Lens queries. After four weeks, compare Organic Shopping against paid Shopping on the conversion analysis screen.
Frequently asked questions
Are Google Shopping free listings really free?
Yes. Creating a Merchant Center account and having products shown in free listings costs nothing, and you never pay per click. You only pay for services you choose yourself, such as a feed management tool or an agency.
Do I need a Google Ads account for free listings?
No. Free listings need only a Merchant Center account, a verified website and approved product data. You need Google Ads only if you want to run paid Shopping or Performance Max campaigns.
How long does it take for products to appear on Google Shopping?
After you submit product data, Google processes and reviews it against its policies. Review can take a few days, and longer for a brand-new account because the website and business details are also checked. Once a product shows as approved on the Products page, it is eligible to appear.
How do my products show up in Gemini and Google Lens?
There is no separate sign-up; Google's help page says free listings can appear on Gemini and Lens. To improve your chances, send clear product images, attribute-rich titles, detailed descriptions and GTINs where they exist.
Where do I see free listings sales in GA4?
Link Merchant Center to GA4 and keep auto-tagging on, and this traffic appears in the Organic Shopping default channel group. Filter the source platform dimension to Shopping Free Listings to isolate it.
Why are my approved products not showing on Google Shopping?
Approval makes a product eligible, not guaranteed to appear. Check that the Free listings card is active, that shipping is set for the target country and that feed and page prices match. If all of that is fine, the issue is usually relevance, so improve titles and attributes.
